Propane Prices vs. Other Fuel Prices
It is interesting to compare propane prices against other fuels, particularly during the typically higher demand winter heating months. The following provides a brief summary of the national average of propane prices vs. national average price of other fuels including gasoline, diesel fuel, and heating oil. The information is per EIA reporting data the first week of February 2012.
Gasoline prices are up 4 cents per gallon from last week (late January 2012) to reach a national average of $3.48 per gallon. This represents a price increase of 35 cents per gallon vs. approximately the same period in 2011.
Diesel prices are up 1 cent per gallon from last week (late January 2012) to reach a national average of $3.86 per gallon. This represents a price increase of 34 cents per gallon vs. approximately the same period in 2011.
Heating oil prices are up 2 cents per gallon from last week (late January 2012) to reach a national average of $3.97 per gallon. This represents a price increase of 40 cents per gallon vs. approximately the same period in 2011.
Propane prices are down 1 cent per gallon from last week (late January 2012) to reach a national average of $2.86 per gallon. This represents a price increase of 3 cents per gallon vs. approximately the same period in 2011. Compared to the fuel prices above, propane has shown the least dramatic change in pricing vs. the prior week and against the same period in 2011. Although this information does not guarantee that this propane pricing pattern will continue for any length of time into the future, it is useful information to keep in mind as consumers evaluate the past, current and future price of fuel.
